Becoming Involved: Mind Over Matter

by Ad 2 Tampa Bay | January 15, 2015

Its now late afternoon and you have to make a decision whether to go or not.  You saw the event online and you know it would be extremely beneficial if you went, but wait a minute … you’re not going to know anybody there – ugh!   Next thing you know, you start to make excuses on why you can’t go.  “It’s too far and I still have to do XYZ before it starts” or “there’s going to be a cover and I don’t have any cash on me” or “I’m tired, I’ll just go to the next one”.  Yet, despite all the excuses that are now filling your brain, deep down you know you should stop being a big baby and just go!

We’ve all been there, some more than others, where you missed out on a great opportunity to do something that would somehow make an impact on your life for the better in some shape or form.  Whether it was a job offer, a great party, or maybe even joining that kickball league, we don’t grab at the chance because we psyche ourselves out.  As I look back on my life, I could kick myself for all the chances I passed up because of this.  Life is full of chances, but it’s the ones you seize that make all the difference.  That’s how I ended up involved with Ad 2 Tampa Bay.

Being an Art History major from University of South Florida I somehow ended up in advertising.  I hadn’t even finished my first week at my new job in an industry that I really had no clue about when one of my best friends called me up and said “Awesome, now you can join Ad 2 Tampa Bay.”  Not only did she want me to become a member but she wanted me to sit on the board with her!  I was so nervous because 1) I didn’t really know what Ad 2 Tampa Bay was about, 2) I didn’t know anybody that was sitting on the board, and 3) I really didn’t know much about advertising in general!  Needless to say, I never felt so vulnerable in my life. But, I’ll tell you what … joining was by far the best decision I ever made.

I could have easily said no and made some excuse(s) on why I couldn’t join this organization, but I didn’t.  No one likes to feel vulnerable, but by taking a chance I have educated myself, branded myself, and made such an impact on my community and others (which was more than I ever dreamt I could or would do).  Even though making yourself go to an event, joining an unfamiliar club, or saying yes to something you are unfamiliar with may seem like such a frightening endeavor, all it takes is one small step.  If diving into the deep end head first is your style, more power to you, but if you’re like me, all I ask is that you take one courageous step outside the box and witness the power of Ad 2 Tampa Bay for yourself.  Unlike my friend, I am not going to ask you to sit on our board but who knows, maybe one day you’ll want to!  Like that great man, Buddha, once said “The mind is everything.  What you think you become.”
